Often Pressure (PSI), and Water Volume (GPM) are the two specifications used. A look under the hood will reflect component and machine quality. Length and size of pipe in the heat exchanging coil, oil crankcase capacity of the pump, type of platform and weight of the unit can be better ways to judge quality and longevity. There are standards for our industry on performance (LINK), and one is being developed for combustion or heat transfer efficiency (MaybeLink), but there is very little uniformity. BTU input is a specification that is often mentioned without discussion of temperature rise and a better built machine with a longer coil will require less BTU input for the same temperature output.
